| Abstrak ABSTRACT Febi Nursamsi (A 121 15 248). Developing Speaking Skill of Grade VIII Students at SMPN 2 Tanantovea through Group Discussion. Skripsi.English Education Study Program, Faculty of language and Art Education. It was under the supervision of H. Jamiluddin This research aims at investigating effectiveness of group discussion in developing speaking skill of grade VIII students at SMPN 2 Tanantovea. This is a quasi-experimental research design. The samples were 30 students of classes VIII A and VIII B which were selected purposively. The data were analyzed statistically. They are collected through pretest and posttest. The pretest was conducted to find out the students’ speaking skill before treatments. Mean score of the pretest of experimental class is 38.8 and the one of control class is 42.5. The posttest was administered to measure their speaking skill after the treatments. Mean scores of the posttest are 58.3 for experimental class and 46.7 for control class. By applying the df (degree of freedom) 28 and 0.05 of the significance level, the results of this research indicate that the t-counted value is 4,251 and the ttable value is 1,701, so that the t-counted value is higher than t-table value. It means that the hypothesis of the research is accepted. In other words, using group discussion can develop students speaking skill at SMPN 2 Tanantovea.
