Abstrak
The objective of this research is to prove that the use of mistake buster is effective in Teaching Present Progressive Tense to the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 5 PALU. This research applied a quasi experimental research design consisting of two groups, i.e. experimental and control groups. The population of this research was the eighth grade students consisting of three parallel classes. The researcher choose two of the registered classes as the sample. It was selected by using, a purposive sampling technique. The number of respondents of the sample was 30 students in experimantal and 30 students in control groups. The sample was taken from VIII-A as control class and VIII-B as experimantal group. The instrument of the data collection used in this research was a test which was to measure the students’ grammatical undersanding. The students were asked to fix a mistake from the given sentences. The results of data were analyzed statistically. The results show that there is a significant difference between the score of experimental group and control group. The score of experimental group is higher than the control one. the t-counted (6.91) is higher than the t-table (1.67). In other words, mistake buster technique is moderately effective in teaching Present Progressive Tense to the eighth grade students of SMPN 5 PALU. Moderate effective means that this technique affects the effectiveness in teaching grammar especially Present Progressive Tense, but it needs other technique to be combined in other to make the teaching becomes very Effective.
