Abstrak
Muhammad Ikbal (A12115206.) ´Improving Writing Skill of Grade VIII Students of SMP Negeri 14 Palu through Content-Based Instruction (CBI)´ Skripsi. Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Department of Language and Art Education, English Language Education Study Program, under the supervision of Sudarkam R. Mertosono and Budi. The aim of this research is to find out if using Content-Based Instruction is effective to improve the writing skill of grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 14 Palu. The research applied quasi-experimental design involving an experimental group and a control group. The samples consisted of 21 students of group VIII Maleo as the experimental group and of 22 students of VIII Merpati as the control group. They were selected by using cluster random sampling technique. In collecting the data, they were given the same pre-test and post-test. The treatment was only given to the experimental group. The result indicated that there was an improvement in the posttest in comparison to the pre-test. The mean score of the experimental group increased from 40.21to 81.48, and that of the control group increased from 34.34 to 64.14. It was also found that the t-counted (4.17) was greater than the t-table (1.683), which indicated that the research hypothesis was accepted. Hence, CBI is effective to improve writing skill of grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 14 Palu. Key terms: Improving; Writing; Content-Based Instruction
