Abstrak Nurul Dwi Artika M (A 121 14 221). “The Effectiveness of Project Based Learning Method In Improving Speaking Ability of The Eleventh Grade Students at SMA Negeri 3 Palu”. Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Language and Art Department, English Education Study Program, under the supervision of Mochtar Marhum and Nur Sehang Thamrin. The objective of this research is to prove the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning Method in improving the students’ ability in speaking of eleventh grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Palu. This research applied quasi-experimental research design. Purposive sampling technique was employed to draw the sample of this research which consisted of 23 students of XI MIA 5 as the experimental group and 23 students of XI MIA 2 as the control group. The data were collected by using pre-test and post-test. The pre-test was administered to measure the students’ speaking ability before the treatment, while the post-test was administered to measure the the improvement of the students’ speaking ability after the treatment. The mean score of pre-test of the experimental group was 48.18 while the control group was 53.26. The mean score of the post-test of the experimental group was 68.11 while the control group was 63.40. In analyzing the data, the researcher used 0.05 as level of significance and the 44 (23+23-2) degree of freedom (df). The tcounted value was 4.36 and ttable value was 1.68. The tcounted value was higher than ttable value, it means that the hypothesis was accepted. In other words, the students who are taught with Project-Based Learning method more able to speak English than those who are not taught with Project-Based Learning Method.
