The objectives of this research are to find out, describe, and explain about the strategies used by grade eleven English teachers in teaching speaking and the factors which influence the teachers’ strategies in teaching speaking. This research was conducted using qualitative approach, through case study research design. Referring to the results of the interview and qualitative data analyses, it was found that grade XI English teachers use various strategies in teaching speaking to students. There are at least 10 strategies that the English teachers use. They are: storytelling, discussion, memorization, cooperative learning, role play, pair work, drilling, simulation, presentation, and game. Additionally, storytelling is the most popular and commonly used strategy by the three English teachers. It is followed by the discussion strategy which is used by two of the three English teachers. Similarly, memorization strategy is used by two out of three English teachers interviewed in this research. Then, the rest strategies are only used by one for each, out of the three English teachers. Relying on the second objective, there are four factors that influence the teachers’ strategies in teaching speaking. They are: curriculum, learning styles, school infrastructure, and the students’ skills and abilities. All teachers agreed that the most important factor affecting the strategies is curriculum. It is followed by the students’ skills and abilities factor, then the students’ learning styles and school infrastructure. In conclusion, the ten strategies and the factors affecting the strategies which were obtained through the interview cannot be separated from each other. Keywords: Strategy, Teaching, Speaking. |
