Abstrak This research is to find out wether the use of Context Clues Strategy can improve reading comprehension of the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 18 Palu. This research applied quasi experimental research design by involving experimental and control groups. The population of the research was the eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 18 Palu. The sample was taken by applying purposive sampling technique. The sample was 25 students of VIII A as the experimental group and 25 students of VIII D as the control group. The treatment was given only to the experimental group, while the control group was not. The Instrument of data collection was a reading test (pretest and posttest). Based on the data analysis, it is found that there were significant difference between the score of the experimental and control groups. The post-test shows that the t-counted (3.4) was higher than the t-table (2.011) by applying 0.05 level of significance and the degree of freedom (48) (DF=25+25-2). It indicates that the implementations of Context Clues Strategy can improve Reading comprehension of the eighth grade students at SMP Negeri 18 Palu. The implication of the finding towards the better of teaching reading is that the teachers need to make students understand reading one way with context clues, namely preparing words that are difficult to understand.
