Abstrak
Satrio (A 121 14 089). “Reading Comprehension Level of the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Sindue. Skripsi. English Education Study Program, Language and Art Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Tadulako University. Under the supervision of Abdul Kamaruddin. The objectives of this research are at finding out the students’ reading comprehension and finding out the problems faced by the students of SMP Negeri 1 Sindue in reading comprehension. Additionally, this study was conducted through a descriptive qualitative research design in which the results aredescribed and explained. The data of this research were taken from the English teacher of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Sindue. To support the data obtained, the researcher interviewed the English teacher of the eighth grade students in terms of students’ reading comprehension and problems faced by the students during the teaching and learning process of reading comprehension. Moreover, referring to data analysis and explanation, it is obtained that all students examined in this research did not pass the reading comprehension test provided by the teacher. All students obtained scores in range of 40-74 (below the passing grade of ?75) which are categorized as low. Then, as explained by the teacher and supported by the analysis, the students’ reading comprehension is in literal comprehension level. Meaning that the students only understand information and facts stated directly in texts provided. In line with it, the problems faced by the students come not only from the teacher, but also from the students. The problems faced by the students are: dealing with comprehending the text, getting the key information, vocabulary, and being aware of the characters in a story. In conclusion, in order to help the students gain more achievement in reading comprehension, the synergy between the teacher, the strategy, and the students is needed.
