Abstrak
Selfianti A 121 14 068, The Use of Short Story to Improve Speaking Skill of the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 4 Sigi. A Skripsi. English Education Study Program. Language and Art Education Department. Teacher Training and Education Faculty. Tadulako University. Under the supervision of Sriati Usman. The objective of this research is to prove that the use of short story can improve speaking skill of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Sigi. This research used a quasi-experimental research design which involved experimental and control classes. The research samples were class X MIA 3 as the experimental class with 28 students and class X MIA 2 as the control class with 26 students. The data of the research were collected through test, in form of pre-test and post-test. The treatment was given only to experimental class. The data were analyzed statistically in order to find out the significant difference of students’ achievement in pre-test and post-test. The research findings show that the mean score of experimental class on pre-test is 30.36 while that of the control class is 29.80. The mean score of experimental class on post-test is 48.80 while that of the control class is 40.06. It reveals that the use of short story can improve the students’ speaking skill. By using the 0.05 level of significance and 53 degree of freedom, it discovered that the value of the t-counted (4.17) is higher than the value of t-table (1.67). It means that the hypothesis is accepted. In other words, the use of short story can improve speaking skill of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 4 Sigi.
