Abstrak Elsa Herianti (A121 14 044). “The Effectiveness of Mind Mapping Technique in Improving Writing Skill of Eight Grade Students of SMP Negeri 1 Sojol Utara.” Skripsi, English Education Study Program, Language and Art Education Department, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Tadulako University. Under the supervision of Hasan The objective of the research is to prove that the use of Mind Mapping Technique is effective in improving students’ ability in writing Descriptive text of the eighth grades students at SMP Negeri 1 Sojol Utara. This research used a quasiexperimental research design which involved experimental and control groups. The research samples were VIII A as the experimental group with 23 students and VIII B as the control one with 23 students selected by using purposive sampling technique. The data of the research were collected through pre-test and post-test. The treatment was given only to experimental group. The data were analyzed statistically in order to find out the significant difference of students’ achievement in pre-test and post-test. The mean score of experimental group on pre-test is 22.10, while that of the control one is 30.07. The mean score of experimental group on post-test is 50.36, while that of the control one is 42.03. By using the 0.05 level of significance and 44 degree of freedom, it was discovered that the value of the t-counted (5.71) is higher than the t-table (1.97). It means that the hypothesis is accepted. In other words, the use of Mind Mapping Technique is effective in improving students’ ability in writing Descriptive text of the eighth grades students at SMP Negeri 1 Sojol Utara.
