Abstrak ABSTRACT This research was conducted through Library Research. The objectives of this research are decribing the steps of five previous studies on the application of using pictures in teaching writing descriptive text and explain the reasons for the effectiveness of the use pictures to improve students’ writing ability. The data sources were taken from a paper written by Wright (1989) as primary data and Halimatus Sa’diyah (2010), Isticomah (2017), Nurhana M (2019), Melia S, Jismulatif, et al. (2017), and Maola K., Ima I., et al. (2020) as the secondary data. The results showed that the application of the use picture as media in teaching descriptive text consists of 5 roles. 1) Pictures can motivate the students and make him or her want to pay attention and want to take apart. 2) Pictures contribute to the context in which the language is being used. They bring the world into the classroom. 3) The pictures can be described in objective way or interpreted or responses to subjectively. 4) Pictures can respond to questions, or cue substitutions through control practice. 5) Pictures can stimulate and provide information to be referred to in conversation, discussion, and storytelling. Four researchers followed all roles which produced by Wright, except Maola K., and Ima I., et al. They added an online activity, namely asking students to discuss through WhatsApp online applications are quite well implemented. Students can follow well and the teacher can explain teaching materials and the use of pictures in descriptive text writing ability. Using pictures to teach writing is a good innovation since it can stimulate the students' interest in writing. The teacher will be more easy to explain to create a descriptive text. It can be concluded that the use of pictures is an appropriate medium to improve students' ability in writing. By looking at pictures, the students will be able to catch the idea of what had to be written. Key Words: Writing, Picture, Descriptive Text. |
