Abstrak This research is to investigate whether students’ vocabulary can be improved through context clues of grade X at SMAN 2 Palu or not. It applied quasi-experimental research design. The samples were 30 students consisted of two classes, namely experimental class (15) and control class (15), selected by purposive sampling technique. The experimental class (X MIA 2) was given treatments by applying context clues strategy in improving vocabulary, while the control class (X MIA 1) was taught conventionally as the teacher applies. The data were collected through observation, field notes and tests. The result of the mean score in pre-test for the experimental class is 60,8 while the control class is 62,4 and the result of the mean score in post-test of the experimental class is 74,4 and the control class is 68,8. The data was analyzed statistically by using t-test to calculate that there is a significant difference between the result in the pretest and the posttest. By applying 0.05 level of significance and 28 degree of freedom (df), it is found out that the value of t-counted is 2.83 and t-table was 2.04, so that t-counted value is higher than t-table value. It means that the research hypothesis is accepted. In other words, the application of Context clues can Improve the Vocabulary of the tenth grade students at SMA Negeri 2 Palu.
