Abstrak
The objective of this research was to find out the effectiveness of the use of picture in teaching vocabulary to the grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 6 Palu. The research was aimed at finding the use of picture is effective to teach students’ vocabulary or not. The research was true-experimental research design. The population of this research was the grade VIII students at SMP Negeri 6 Palu and the sample was VIIIB and VIIIE grade. The sample of this research was selected using a random sampling technique. 30 students from VIIIB grade as the experimental group and 30 students from VIII E grade as the control group. The instrument of gathering data was a test. The test was given to the both groups twice as pre-test and pos-test. The data were analyzed by using statistical analysis in order to know the significant difference of the students’ vocabulary mastery in the pre-test and post-test. Based on the results of the data analysis, it was found that the value of the t-counted was 2.76. Consulting to the t-value by applying degree of freedom (df) of Nx + Ny – 2 = 30+30-2 = 58 and 0.05 of critical value, it was found that the value of the t-table was 2.000. It showed that the t-counted value was higher than the t-table value. It means that the hypothesis of the research was accepted. Therefore, it could be concluded that the use of picture can effectively improve the teaching of vocabulary of grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 6 Palu.
