Novita Sari Tamponu. 2025. The Symbolic Meaning of Sampapitu Custom in the Pamona Tribal Marriage. Skripsi. Bachelor?s Degree. Indonesian Language Education Study Program, Language and Art Education Department, Teacher Training and Education Faculty, Tadulako University. Under the supervision of Pratama Bayu Santosa. This research examines the meaning of verbal and nonverbal symbols in the Sampapitu custom within the Pamona tribal marriages. The research aims to describe the forms and meanings of verbal and nonverbal symbols in this customary practice. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation from selected informants. Data analysis followed a three-step process: (1) data reduction, (2) data presentation, and (3) conclusion/verification. The findings revealed that Sampapitu, or somba anu papitu (meaning "one but there are seven"), comprises several symbolic elements: Dula peulayanya, topi inenya, tali inenya, bauga mpapanya, tombo, rapintombo, and posambarue. These elements are physically represented by one tray and six pieces of cloth. The dula (tray) symbolises a neutralising tool that helps maintain a calm and happy household. At the same time, the six pieces of cloth represent replacements for the sarongs used by mothers, fathers, and family members who raised the daughter from birth to marriageable age. Keywords: meaning, symbol, Pamona tribal marriage ceremony, sampapitu custom
